Latest version of the agri-food LCA database

The Agri-footprint LCA database for agri-food processes and products is under continuous development. Since its release in 2014 the database has been expanded by adding high quality data, making Agri-footprint an increasingly valuable source of information for experts working on environmental assessments of agri-food products. It is therefore not surprising that the database is highly valued by the food industry, LCA experts, scientific community and government authorities.
For some time version 5.0 is available as Excel format via our Tool Portal and via openLCA Nexus.

Soon Agri-footprint 5.0 will also become available for SimaPro users, with the next update of SimaPro (version 9.1.1). In this article you can already read how to update your projects from Agri-footprint 4.0 to Agri-footprint 5.0

For version 5.0 we expanded the scope for crops, included more countries en more feed markets. Besides that, new models on fertilizers, energy and pesticides have been added and amino acids for animal feed are disclosed in the updated version.

Agri-footprint 5.0 - What’s new?

More countries and more feed markets

In this updated version of Agri-footprint we included more countries and expanded the scope for crops. We also focused on more feed markets. In addition to the Dutch feed market, there is now a stronger focus on feed materials in the European and American market.

More market mixes and improvement on emission modelling

In order to include market mixes of important processed feed materials, like soybean meal and rapeseed meal, we used trade data (and some ‘logic’) on processed feed. Also improvements on emission modelling were included: ammonia emissions from fertilizers are based on tier 2 emission factors and nitrogen monoxide emissions have been added to cultivation inventories. Furthermore, the inclusion of co-production in cultivation has influenced crop residue calculations and associated emissions.

New models: fertilizer, energy and pesticides

Furthermore, activity data for crop cultivation have been updated. This means new models have been developed to quantify inputs and emissions in more detail and more consistently throughout the database. These new models include a fertilizer model to estimate the NPK use, based on the most recent industry data. Energy model to estimate energy demand for nine different on field agricultural activities, based on crop and country-specific parameters. Besides that, pesticide model has been included to estimate the amount of insecticides, fungicides and herbicides applied, based on most recent public data.

What's next?

We continuously work on expansion and improvement of Agri-footprint. In the coming months we will work on the update of various activity data, think of new FAO statistics on yield per hectare. Besides that, our efforts will be focused on the adaption of the peat oxidation model, and incorporation of the IPCC 2019 update. And of course, the geographical scope and number of products will be expanded. We expect the release the next update of Agri-footprint in spring 2021.
